The design on this pen is adapted from a kimono designed in 1973 by Moriguchi Kunihiko. His designs are inspired by the natural world, but are based on a process of abstraction which involves taking one stylized motif and subjecting it to a series of mathematically determined transformations. The design on this pen is adapted from a screen- printed cotton furnishing fabric, designed by Barbara Brown for Heals, London, in 1962.
The Victoria and Albert Museum holds an extensive collection of dress and textiles by 1960s British designers.
This pen is one of a series of V&A rollerball and fountain pens.
